My son has very limited understandable speech and LOTS of errors in sounds. Dog is "gog" bye is "bah" cookie, turkey, yuckie, come out as "uhkie" home is "yum" and he can make a lot of sounds but they are always in the wrong place like he can say "uhkie" but not "key" alone and I know it's not just apraxia he definitely has autism but I think he may be higher functioning than I give him credit for because he recognizes a lot more words than he can say even though he is far from normal in⦠read more
My son is high functioning and diagnosed w apraxia. After about 6mo of PROMPT speech therapy (5 days per week) and 35hrs ABA (they work on a lot of speech too) his apraxia has pretty much resolved (according to his Slp's). He has a bunch of real words now, but much of his language consist of approximations still. If your son consistently says words wrong-for example always says gog for dog, that's actually better than if he says gog, bog, doh..., this is according to my Slp. My son has the same issue of saying certain words consistently wrong which... for true apraxia they say the words wrong AND differently every time.
My son made strides in his pronunciation once he started receiving speech. He is high functioning ASD with ADHD combined. He still says some words incorrectly and many times will make up his own word if he does not know what he wants/needs to say, but receptive and expressive speech are different. We used to practice in front of a mirror. I would say the words and have him mimic me when looking in the mirror, so he could see how my mouth/tongue moves to make the sounds etc. Then he would say it and be able to look at himself as well. My son loves looking at himself talk in a mirror.
Robin I feel you my son is the way. It is really hard for me to figure out what he understands he doesn't really use a lot of words though. I wish I knew if he understand, at times I know for sure understands and other time I wonder.
He says words wrong and they change a lot too but not every time. I can understand him, like half the time but I'm the only one. Thanks for the feedback. My son starts Aba in a week
I understand that but it's hard to figure out what he understands and says and it's so frustrating
