Epic Home Schooling
A MyAutismTeam Member asked a question 💭

Did any one enroll their kids with autism in epic home schooling that is internet based tution free k-12 grades? Any success? My 9 years-old attend SDC at local public school. School district wants to send her to a non public school/SLDC that is far from my home. I was thinking of Epic.

I'd be careful about the charter school you look to enroll your child in. Some online charter schools are fantastic while others are simply terrible. Many students of online charter schools are doing well below the average compared to their peers at local public schools.

I'd research the charter school, complaints and so forth.

That isn't to say that an online charter school wouldn't be beneficial. My eldest child attends a local charter school, tuition free for NH residents. While it sort of saddens me, because the local high school is one of the top 100 public schools in the country, I am grateful he has this opportunity. Public school, regardless of how well the school is, was not a right fit for him. (He does not have autism, but...rather... a severe mental illness that makes public school a nightmare for everyone involved...). The charter school is highly rated and very supported even by his zoned school, who uses it for their summer school program.

The one thing that is a concern, especially for a child with autism, would be supplementing therapies as well as socialization. If your child struggles to communicate and socialize effectively, you might want to seek out a therapy based socialization program outside of the charter school. The other major thing is keeping him engaged and motivated. Online classes are known for their flexibility and while some states require a set amount of hours (Ohio requires the students attend 6 hours a day, even online), others merely require so many assignments to be completed each week. My son must complete 3-4 assignments per week, depending on the class. But if your son does not have the maturity and self-discipline to do what is required to maintain his education on his own, you will need to play a huge supportive hand in his education (like I must for my son).

So, it will be heavily up to you to keep him motivated and engaged. While the Charter school dishes out my sons assignments and teacher grades them, it's 100% up to me to monitor his grades and work for completion and competency. Daily, I will look at the assignments he has due, and tell him which assignments in each class need to be finished today, then if he has a test due next, I require him anywhere between 1-2 hours of studying the unit before having him take the test, and I am there beside him to ensure he does not cheat (google the answers). On top of that, we have to have phone conferences (as a group) 5 times a month (one for each teacher) and then he has to have personal conferences with each teacher 1-2 times per week.

So, it takes a lot of work, and in order to ensure he succeeds, you need to be prepared to be, essentially, homeschooling him yourself.
