I am going through it now. I go for my IEP evaluation at preschool tomorrow and my daughter goes to private. I made a list of questions I want to ask. Some are the following:
- How are they doing the progress reporting to track his development
- Will he be in a special ed class or what is called a cross cat class which is a normal class but with an aide.
- Six raito of the class
- Since mine is a half of day will they provide lunch and since my son is a picky eater can I bring in food for him
- What are the procedure if he acts up really bad, when will parents get called?

I am still making my list lol.

My boys were evaluated last year in Florida. There were 2 individuals from Child Find that did the assessment. I was there with them but could not help them of course. One assessment is done by how your son follows directions and if he follows through with the tasks. They do it with toys by the way. If your son has speech delay make sure that they include in the iep that he receives speech therapy during school hours. There is so much to know! I hope i have helped a little bit! You can always hire an advocate to make sure you r son is represented fairly!

They are going to evaluate for both academic purposes and for just all around purposes however they are more going to focus on academics.

What you want to address is speech, PT,OT comprehension, and behavior, and ABA.They are going to suggest what they feel your child needs based on the evaluation and sometime the schools think children need less than you do. I am not sure the level of ASD your child has or if he is verbal or not so I can't really tell you what I would fight for specifically but you want to have them concentrate on the most pressing needs. If a child is nonverbal I always suggest communication skills whether it be actual speech, PECS or sign language it is very important. A lot of behavior issues stem from sensory issues and lack of communication so if the child is better able to communicate the behaviors get better.

I would suggest asking for an IEP and if they try to pysh a 504 instead I would again get push for an IEP because it is more of a contract wheras the 504 is more of a plan with accomadations.

We had an outside evaluation done by a neurologist but also had written letters from the psychiatrist and the PCP as well, so the district had a hard time fighting against all the documentation we threw at them.
