Anyone Know Of Any Government Or Other Services Offering Help With Transportation And With ABA Therapy In General?
A MyAutismTeam Member asked a question 💭

I am really just asking for suggestions and opinions. Just wandering if anyone knows of any Federal or State (CA) Assistance programs. I am waiting to see what Easter Seals comes up with.

Why?
My son receives ABA Therapy via Abrite which is a subcontractor of Easter Seals which is a subcontractor of Kaiser (our Medical Insurance Provider).

Abrite doesn't have an office we can go to for therapy.
I am responsible for having a place where they can go to do their therapy.

At daycare, after… read more

Hey there! I'm located up near SF, and have experience with Easter Seals. They don't, as far as I know, provide transportation for services. They only provide therapists who travel to locations. My guess is the same can be said for any subcontractors (re: Abrite). That said, my son had therapy both in our home, and at his preschool. The preschool was totally chaotic -- 30+ kids running around at any given time, and zero private space. While goals were harder to run in that environment, they weren't impossible.

It's true that establishing a bond between therapist & kiddo is key to successful therapy. It's also true that therapist turn-over is excruciatingly high -- par for the course with entry level positions that require only a 30-hour training course. We went through at least 10 therapists over the course of 1.5 years, plus two turn-overs of our clinical case manager and supervisor team. The whole second half of our time with Easter Seals was a mess. While I wouldn't call it counter productive, it was definitely not all that it could have been if managed properly.

Changing providers is no walk in the park and will likely take several months, it could be worthwhile. While we've only worked with Easter Seals, Gateway has a relationship with our preschool (the chaotic 30+ kid one mentioned above) to provide services to families on-site at the school, and were actively working with several kids when we left. Gateway is covered by Kaiser, but you'll need to talk with your Kaiser case manager, lodge a complaint about Arbrite/Easter Seals being unable to fulfill your family's needs, and petition for a change to a new provider.

It might be helpful to reach out to Gateway first, as they may be able to help with wording on your petition to Kaiser. http://www.gatewaylg.com/

Good luck! As a fellow single mom, I know all too well the balancing act, and it ain't easy!! You're doing a great job!

If you have Medicaid whether it is primary or secondary you can reach out to them and see if they cover that because they do pay for transport to medical appointments in some states. I think the catch would be what they call a medical appointment. It wouldn't hurt to check.
