My son's has moved from a wonderful self-contained classroom designed for children with autism and sensory issues (elementary school) to a sub-par middle school. The only two types of classrooms this district has for middle school children is this classroom for kids with behavioral problems - that's the class my son's attending, or a life skills classroom. My son doesn't have behavioral problems. He's stuck in the middle. He's too advanced for life skills but not advanced enough for a general ed… read more

My daughter went to school in west Yakima
Middle school on was a struggle
Seems like a fight every step of the way
I looked and looked for other alternatives
I trade a year at job corp and she did well with the very small class sizes, small population, and all computer school programs where u repeatedly take tests til u pass.
I would recommend getting to know your speed director well, there are other things they can do but u have to be clear about what u want etc
We had our daughter do several internships in high school which were good experiences and were inline with her interests

I have never heard of WAVA but I think you might ment PAVE. I have not much support from them in our situation but I have had others that have. We are in a situation where the district is not following our daughter's IEP plus a teacher that has a Master in Special education but never taught it but rather spent most of her career teaching World Language Arts. Our daughter as of today has yet have received her 350 minutes per week of General education service and speech services was not given until 22 days after school started. I'm about to skip the Citizen Complaint and give them a wake up call by filing a Due Process. I have filed a Citizen Complaint twice once I won the second I didn't because the investigator used previous school year rather the year we were complaining about. I have a good advice from the Ombusman at OSPI and from the OEO.

@A MyAutismTeam Member , thanks for the info about WAAA. Yes, my request was in writing.

I'm aware they're required by law to schedule an IEP meeting but it's not worth the fight here. This district has already been sued by another parent.

I'd honestly rather move or try homeschooling. Have you heard of any success with WAVA?

I live in Seattle area and I must have you got any of your request in writing? If so use that to your advantage to tell the district what your seeking for your child. The law states in IDEA that IEPs meeting can be call at any time. I would contact the OEO that's Office of Education Ombusman and OSPI. You can if your not connected yet contact WAAA that's a Washington Autism Advocacy Alliance they can help you.
