School/Class Strictly Autism Class And Mixing Special Ed (non Autism ) Class Together
A MyAutismTeam Member asked a question 💭

We had our IEP yesterday, it went as well as it could go
I was able to add on a 3rd day of speech therapy for my daughter, so that was a Win!

She currently attends a special day class, it's a mix of Kinder , 1st and 2nd grade class all on the spectrum. Although I love the idea of her being in this smaller class , with more aides and possible more focus, I wonder if she'd benefit from being in another special ed class where the kids are not only more social but also more vocal. Wondering… read more

Hi dualspectrumdad,

Thank for your comments and input.

Yes, I agree with the socialization; we work on that at home as well. She's our only child, so we try our best to take her out to different social public events so she can interact with other kids.
What I was mainly hoping for was the language interaction with the other children at school.
Right now she's surrounded with children that have similar language levels as her so it seems there is not a "role model" (student) in her class that can possibly challenge her a little and hopefully she can pick up the language more. At least that's the idea....honestly not sure if it would be the best option or not. I just know she is capable of much more , she is very bright and I know she has great potential. We just need to find the right setting for her to learn the best. At this point , we are just seeking information and seeing what's out there to add on and help her out.

My thought is always get as much as you can as early as you can. You have plenty of time to work on social skills later so if you can get more in depth therapies and services, and the school is willing to do it I would take what I could get.

Don't get me wrong socialization is great but you can't force it and if your child is not ready for it then it isn't going to help anyway. I agree small steps are the way to go.

If mainstreaming is ever done it should be done gradually.
