Hypothyroidism & Autism
A MyAutismTeam Member asked a question 💭

Hello! So it's late here and I was researching a bit about hair problems (because I've been dealing with hair loss/thinning for a couple years) and ended up reading about hypothyroidism . It mentioned symptoms about it and also about how it effects the fetus/baby during pregnancy. Pretty much I saw a link between the two, read more into it, and came to realize If that is what links some kids with autism? I am by no means a professional, just a mother who has an autistic toddler, had a hard (but… read more

I have Hashimoto's and have also heard of a link. My son's developmental pediatrician says he sees more and more Moms of children on the spectrum who have Hashimoto's. For me, I have found that avoiding gluten has been extremely helpful for my symptoms.

Thank you for commenting :) i need to go see my doctor and figure out what's wrong with me lol. I can't imagine cutting gluten out. It's in everything. Any websites or books that have been the best for helping you cut it out? It's not easy. Lol. Also weird question but do you have thinning hair or have noticed it before you cut gluten out? I'm just wondering because that's my main problem is I can see my scalp now and that's how I ended up finding out about thyroids, etc.

That is very interesting! I know my mom has an autoimmune disorder but I can't remember what it was. I am positive I have it too. I just never heard about this before & I would think they would screen women before having a child. I only have one child ( a boy ) and he was diagnosed with autism. He's only 3 so it's moderate to mild autism as of right now. I do think vaccines had a play in it. I'm just curious about the link between autism (intellectual disabilities/ delays) and things like hypothyroidism that the mother can be affecting the baby (and sadly not even know).

I read somewhere that women who have Hashimoto's thyroiditis are 9 times more likely to have children with autism.
I have two children who are on the spectrum, one more severely than the other. The one who is less severe did NOT have the MMR.

Not saying that proves anything, since they had different fathers, but it is interesting, nonetheless.

Oh yea, also I guess I didn't mention I have Hashimoto's too, lol. I'm taking Armour thyroid - like it much better than the synthroid.

Even though my levels are okay, I still had issues with the thinning hair until I bought a boars hair brush.

I kid you not, I used it for only a month and my hair started getting longer again (it had been stuck at the same length for years) and the split ends have disappeared.

My hair is not thick, but it's never really been that thick, so it's not like it's given me really thick hair, but my hair is NOT as thin as it was getting.

Hoping that the longer I use it, the thicker my hair will get - lol. Also, thinking about going "no poo", but haven't really investigated it to find out what to expect. I do know that we are bombarded with chemicals 24/7 everywhere, so it's no small wonder so many of us have autoimmune diseases!
