Hello,
This may seem like a silly question but I am trying to see what kind of activities 17 year old nonverbal low functioning, but active teens are engaged in? I am trying to help my son explore new interest as I can see he is changing and needs some new ideas.
Thanks,
Lisa

Members offered heartfelt suggestions for engaging nonverbal teens with autism, emphasizing that every child is different and encouraging parents to observe their child's unique interests through trial and error. Several members shared activities that worked for their children, including fitness videos with personal trainers, sensory-friendly swimming programs, walks at local tracks, music and educational apps on tablets, car rides through tunnels, mall elevator trips, adaptive sports through Miracle League and Challenger League programs, peer-to-peer programs pairing special needs teens with neurotypical peers, visits to zoos and parks, and outings for favorite foods. A recurring theme was the need for patience and flexibility, as some activities required one-on-one support and sensory accommodations, and members acknowledged both the joy of finding what works and the heartbreak when interest fades or challenges like aggression and sensory issues make outings difficult.

My son is 13, almost 14. He is very particular. He has always loved his tablet. I make sure his music is on there, games as well as educational apps that is his level appropriate. He loves video games, through the years we've done leap pad type stuff and now he is up to a ps3. I always say it has to be some ot therapy there with all that finger movement. I'm lucky to live in my state. They offer summer school, is more lax than through the school year, more activities, more fun activities. 4 days a week, or little as you want. They offer challenger league things, special Olympic activities year round. I've put him in things and we figure out quickly what he doesn't care for, but we always try things. He even did 2 years of taekwondo. This was great for him. Small groups, good one on one, helps with focus and discipline.

Your question is not silly at all. Find out what your child likes every kid is different. My son started watching fitness videos on the computer. I found a personal trainer that works with children on the spectrum so i take him to the gym every other Saturday, Does your son like any type of sports? All the best to you in finding a activity for your son.

My son is a toe walker and unfortunately broke his leg the first and last time he tried roller skating. He did really love it until the broken leg part. Thank you for the suggestion.
