William attended a speech,PT and OT facility that provided hippo therapy with each session for several years .Unfortunately they went out of business. During the time he attended he had an assigned horse (Sparky) and really looked forward to that portion of his therapy. For example, he would work in the office with his therapist sometimes on a computer program or with manipulative then go to the barn where staff had Sparky ready to mount. He would wear a riding helmet. The riding area was set up to have learning station stops around the ring. At the end there was a time to just ride around the ring a few times uninterrupted. A staff member always walked beside the horse but he became very comfortable in guiding, stopping etc. I think his responses to therapy were enhanced by the connection he developed with Sparky. His smile and eagerness to ride certainly reflected enjoyment. It was a big disappointment when the facility closed as it was the only hippo therapy in the area.
