Margate, FL

Does anyone live in South Florida and know of any doctors in general practice that will see patients that are severely autistic? We are having trouble trying to find a doctor. Any information will be greatly appreciated. Thank you.

Members offered practical guidance to help a parent in South Florida find medical care for their severely autistic 21-year-old son, sharing specific resources including the Mount Sinai Medical Center in Miami Beach (which has a staff trained by the University of Miami's Center for Autism and Related Disabilities) and Nicklaus Children's Dan Marino Outpatient Center in Weston. Several members discussed the importance of applying to Florida's Agency for Persons with Disabilities for long-term support services, sharing their own experiences with waitlists, case management, and planning for their children's futures as adults. A recurring theme was the challenges of finding reliable respite care, the bond formed between parents navigating similar struggles, and the comfort of connecting with others who truly understand the complexities of raising an autistic child.

I forgot to ask you this.

Did you/have you applied to Agencies for Persons with Disabilities? The provide services in FL. It is not a 1,2,3 thing, but I think you would get assistance right away or a lot quicker esp. since I read what you wrote about your son etc.

I just got my son on the wait list which I started the process in Oct. For us, the reason it took so long is that they couldn't determine "how autistic" he was since he is considered high functioning. (FYI, I really don't like those labels b/c someone who is considered HF can have as many issues as someone who is considered sever). I had to send in a bunch of paperwork along with letters from his Dr.'s, teachers etc to explain why I wanted him at least on the wait list. For us, the main reason is b/c my husband and I are "older", he's 59 and me, I just turned the big 5-0 and if God forbid something happened to us, the member of my family who would care for him would be clueless, plus they couldn't put him on their insurance unless they adopted him. My son isn't eligible for services until he's 22 or if something happens to us.

Once you get accepted, your case worker puts together a plan of what services would fit your situation best. They provide everything from nurses, medical equipment etc. I just got my info of what they will be providing for my son if he needs that when he's an adult.

LMK if you have or if you are using some other service to help you out.

You're welcome. I also just read this article and I think this will really help you out if you are willing to drive to Miami.(I know 95 is horrible along with every other road, don't miss that lol). Here's what was in the article and below is the link to the article.

" Lowenstein Building at Mount Sinai Medical Center in Miami Beach is a staff of doctors, nurses and attendants trained by the University of Miami’s Center for Autism and Related Disabilities to treat autistic adults over 18."

From what I read in the article, it seems like they really took the time to figure out how to help adults. I know from past experience (non autism related) with MU that they have excellent care and my sister has a friend who is a nurse that works between them and Jackson.

Please keep me posted on how it is if you go to them. I would be willing to drive down there when my son becomes an adult if it's worth it and I can't find anyone here.

HI @A MyAutismTeam Member I use to live in Lauderhill but I'm now in Central FL. It's been a while (6yrs) but have you tried contacting Nicklaus Children's Dan Marino Outpatient Center in Weston? The phone number is (Phone number can only be seen by the question and answer creators) and one of the Dr.'s listed for autism is Roberto Tuchman, MD — (Phone number can only be seen by the question and answer creators). They should be able to assist you and give you a list of Dr.'s names that would be able to help you out. Hope this helps.

I wish you hadn't moved or that I knew you before you moved, but everyone has to do what's best for their family. We moved down here from New York about 24 years ago. I have never liked it here. Our son was born here. I don't know how to add my email to the comments either without everyone seeing it. I will try to figure it out and I will let you know. I hope you have a good evening, and Happy Father's day to your husband. 💖 Xoxo

Yes, I know Stuart is an 1 1/2 b/c I use to live over by Piper HS in Sunrise for 20+ years :).I come down and visit my Mom, sisters every couple of months. We all have busy schedules. I now live near the Kennedy Space Center. I can't say exactly b/c this is a public place and it is due to security reason.

Anyway, I figured you were going to tell me about some horror story with the nurses. I'm so sorry your son had to deal with that and you too. It must have been so scary for him. I just don't get people sometimes. I guess that is part of the reason we moved. My husband got a job up here and some scary things were going on at my son's school. He was worried about our son b/c he was different from everyone etc. and it was just time to go.

Have you always lived in Margate? One of my girlfriends use to live there (off Pine Island past DQ)but she moved out of state.

I haven't figured out how to add my email to the comments to you so no one else see's it. Do you know how to do that? Then we could email instead of chatting through this.
