Any Good Schools In Michigan For High Functioning Kids
A MyAutismTeam Member asked a question šŸ’

Our 11 year old daughter was recently diagnosed with high functioning aspergers. She will be in sixth grade next year and we are looking for the best option for schools for her. Either public, private or charter. Any suggestions?

I see this was several years ago. I'm curious what you ended up deciding and how your child ended up doing?

I currently have a 10 (almost 11 - YIKES!!) Daughter who's STRUGGLING in school. Especially being an autistic girl, she presents a little differently and getting her the appropriate services has been extremely difficult. We face school refusal frequently. Now have truancy team newly involved. Starting to fall behind academically for the first time (personally I think the social emotional part is interfering)

Next year she's going to middle school (6th) and I'm not expecting a sudden ability to get her the services I've been unable to for last 6 years.....

Just looking for any input from anyone further down this path then we are. I just want what's best for her (&don't know how to get that happening!!)

Welcome. It is a very interesting question. How does she do in her current school? My son is younger than your daughter, so the conversation is a little different. Private schools may be tough because many are hard to get into. We are looking at specialized autism schools, but super expensive. Public school seems to entirely depend on the teacher and environment. Some are great, some are terrible. I don't think the district has a lot to do with it. Have to get lucky and get a good teacher. For me, I'm most worried about bullying and things of that sort, so will probably opt for some sort of specialized/private school.
