Waking Up From A Nap Is Torture For My Son. Has Anyone Experienced This? How Do You Help?
A MyAutismTeam Member asked a question 💭

My sweet and affectionate 3 year old has had to completely stop naps. When he wakes up from any length of nap he goes into the worse meltdown mode I have ever seen. This can last for an hour or more. Nothing we do consoles him. So, we changed his schedule, earlier bedtime. This is working great for him but after a long day of therapy he sometimes falls asleep in the car. Has anyone else experienced this?

Yes . We had to cut naps out for my daughter or she refused to sleep at night . We cut them out at 1.5. If she naps she is extremely angry the remainder of the day. To prevent sleeping in the car we offer games , we also have a magnetic drawing board for her, music , and cold air

Thank you, I'm so relieved to know someone else understands. I feel like a weight has been lifted lol! We had become so isolated because of this behavior. Our family just couldn't understand or handle it and when we eliminated naps people who didn't understand that it was for his well being looked at us as if we were harming him.
Thank you again.

I hold him on the couch and put on his favorite show Wallykazam and that instantly calms him.

Yes!!!! That's the story of my life!! Every time it never fails when we leave his ABA he falls asleep in the car on our way home n when I try to quietly put him in the bed..he has the biggest meltdown for a good 30 min. I don't give him naps, not for that reason, but so that he sleeps earlier at night. But he does this when his little cat naps are interrupted. @A MyAutismTeam Member
