Netflix, ABC, NBC and so many others are making so many shows about children with disabilities and them doing some fantastic things. There was one autistic teen who was racing a car at the Indianapolis 500. I was shocked but happy. I am glad for the diversity and inclusion.

From an Autistic standpoint, too many of the shows still showcase the medical model of disability rather than the social model of disability; they also have an annoying habit of casting enabled actors in Disabled roles. The show Speechless is good, though. It's had a few issues, and it's not Autism-related, but it's done better than most of the shows about Autism that have been advertised lately.

Atypical, from what I've heard so far, is neither positive nor accurate in terms of how it represents Autism. I haven't heard much about The Good Doctor, but the trailer didn't exactly fill me with hope (it framed Autism as a defect/deficit, used person first language and functioning labels, and seemed likely to reinforce many common stereotypes about Autism/Autistics).

I think it's good but I also don't want our community to think that people with autism always become savants.

Recently I started watching The Good Doctor. I was not sure how this would go with me because I think writers take to many creative liberties with stories about special needs children, adults and teens, however, The Good Doctor is so good that I binged watch all of the episodes. Talk about seeing both my granddaughters in this character. Freddy Highmore is a great actor. I am suggesting this to all you wonderful parents of special needs children to watch. Most of it I dare say is believable. I never thought I would say that, but I think CBS did a good job this time.
