We've been aware of Norah's diagnosis with ASD for almost one month now, and I worry I'm not doing the right things for her in the right order. So far, we've started with a Special Instructor and are going to be starting Physical Therapy in the next week or so. I have been reading as much as I can when I have the time a book called "An Early Start for Your Child with Autism" by Rogers, Dawson, and Vismara.

I guess my overall question is in your experience, what did you feel was most helpful as… read more

Members rallied around a parent navigating the first month after their child's autism diagnosis, offering reassurance that early therapy and self-education are exactly the right steps to take. Several members recommended starting with the Autism Speaks '100 Days After Diagnosis' toolkit, emphasized the importance of early intervention therapies like speech, OT, and behavioral support, and suggested helpful books including 'The Reason I Jump' by Naoki Higashida and works by Tony Atwood. A recurring theme was the need to pace yourself without guilt, ask as many questions as necessary, and remember that understanding how autism uniquely affects your own child is more valuable than trying to absorb everything at once.

You are doing plenty its overwhelming if this is your 1st delve into therapies or classes I had to take a step back in 2017 Jan, it was too advanced for our son and my mental wellbeing took a thrashing.
Don't feel bad if you need to go slower than what you expected for both you and Norahs pace to be right!
I'm going to order "the reason I jump" and listen to the explanations from an autistic boys point of view on his behaviours and feelings.
Our son starts combined speech and OT in October and has a referral in for a morning visit per week from an autism charity, with Christmas coming Im happy thats plenty!

I went in search of my own child's behavior and how it relates to autism. There is such a vast amount of information and each child is affected differently. I felt by understanding how autism affected my child it helped me have a better understanding of her and what she goes through so I can help her! I'm still currently learning. I also am about a month into my daughters diagnosis
