My son is 2.5 years old and non-verbal. He has no understanding of danger. He will climb anything, touch anything, run from me, etc. I've tried yelling, I've tried explaining, I've even tried just trying to avoid it, but that's nearly impossible and I'm just terrified of the day I miss something or he gets himself into a scary situation. Any advice on how to convey danger? Hot, ouch, hurt, etc?
I wanted to let you know that the National autism association offers "The Big Red Box" it's a free box full of helpful information& devices( like door alarms, stickers,shoe& bracelet alert id's)and other stuff!!We ordered one for our son and found it helpful along with the other tools we use.Hope this helps.
This is very common with children who have ASD. My son is 2 years old and is the same way. He has a med braclet he wears on his wrist in case he was to ever get away from us ( WHICH IS NEVER) he will climb anything as well and just does not understand it can hurt him. I would encourage you to kiddy proof your home in every way possible that you can think of. Parents like us have a full time job making sure our kiddos are safe. I have not found nor heard of anyway to help this. Therapy of course is where it should be addressed. Does your child go to any therapy currently?
