Are Your Kids In Any Extra Activities? Which One If So

A MyAutismTeam Member asked a question 💭

I am looking to put my son in something fun he sees his sister go to gymnastics and I feel sad. He is non verbal and I have no idea what to put him in other than swim classes.

I am afraid people will not understand him or watch him either.

Members shared creative solutions for finding activities that work for non-verbal children with autism, with swimming emerging as a consistent favorite because it provides sensory input, is calming, and works well as an individual sport rather than requiring group interaction. Several members recommended checking with schools about funded programs, exploring special recreation associations that offer one-on-one instruction and aids for group classes, and trying activities like art, music, karate, parkour, or special needs sports leagues that accommodate communication differences. A recurring theme was the importance of starting with activities that match a child's sensory needs and comfort level, celebrating small victories like reducing water phobia rather than focusing on traditional milestones, and not giving up after early attempts don't work out.

We are in a similar position as my son has tried soccer (huge fail), gymnastics (another fail) and swimming. He LOVES swimming and I think it's because it's a singular sport, whereas the others are more group oriented and can involve physical contact from others. Our son finds swimming to be soothing and I think it's because it provides pressure, blocks out/muffles sounds and the motion in water is fluid and calming.

His other favorite past time is art. Maybe your son would find a way of communication through drawing, painting or even music?

Here we have baseball, soccer, and basketball leagues for special needs kids. We also have Sports Social for special needs that have music, sports classes bases on ABA.
