How Do Your Kids Handle Lockdown Drills At School?
A MyAutismTeam Member asked a question 💭

My son doesn't like these and I honestly was terrified by how he would react to these when he started school. A has handled it ok so far but it's still kind of scary maybe more so for me then him. How does your kid react or what are your worries if they haven't started school yet?

It’s funny you mention this, my son told me last night about how at school they have an alarm, and they “must hide under their desks and pretend to be invisible”. I found it really heartbreaking. He didn’t seem disturbed by it, I asked him why he thought they were hiding? And he said “From killers who don’t belong at school.”
I’m fairly certain he doesn’t understand what a “killer” is. We kind of shelter our kids from the news, so it must have been what he heard from the other children.
It is an unbelievable world we live in right now. ☹️

This might be something you would include in an IEP or 504 plan and see if he can stay home during the drill, find a quiet place on campus or maybe do a separate drill with him and other children with the same needs.

I will have to ask about this tomorrow. It is sad that our irreplaceable children are protected by unarmed educators hoping that they are not discovered in an attack, while banks and museums have armed security. Our state and county offices are protected by armed peace officers, yet our schools are told to hide and wait for law enforcement. Seems like a double standard with our kids getting the short end of the stick.

Lockdown drills are basically shooter drills where the alarm goes off and the teacher hides the kids. A says normally the whole class goes into the bathroom and sit on the floor in the dark. Other classes hide the kids in different areas. Most schools have some version of this now days.
