Respite Care And Health Waivers

A MyAutismTeam Member asked a question 💭
Dubuque, IA

I contacted a place today to inquire about respite care and a health waiver because a friend told me I needed to get it for my son.. what exactly is the health waiver? What is it going to do for him?

Our family was accepted into a rap program and we got info on health waivers and respite care. I love this agency so far.

Are you referring to a Medicaid waiver? If so you'd be wise to look into before spending thousands of dollars on therapies. We used a waiver in Georgia because it's based on the kid's income not the parents.

I'm not sure what it looks like for you, I'm in a different country and province. Here we have publicly sourced respite funds from the government, we go through a lot of forms to use it, and it has a lot of restrictions. I'm thinking it could be something like that.

She said the waiting list was outrageous but I have yet to sign him up for respite care because I'm not sure what to do yet. He already spends 2 full days at school and the rest is therapy then school so really he's not getting nearly as much time with me anymore

This was so helpful. We tried the Deeming (sp) Waiver in GA many years ago and got denied. I haven't tried any other ones because that was such a long process.
