Apraxia of speech
Childhood apraxia of speech

Can anyone who's chils has this condition please give some info on how your child was diagnosed, our son is mouthing his way aroynd the sing songs yet nothing comes out at this time. He is extremely vocal with stimms.

I believe he struggles to get the words out and it looks like the message from brain to mouth is getting lost...Ive read about CAS childhood apraxia of speech and just wonder is it easily identified or diagnosed?

Thank you.

@A MyAutismTeam Member, I really wouldn't fixate on this kind of diagnosis. My son was over three yo when he started saying his first word ("car") and his progress has been slow, but steady and he can speak now! I didn't know if he would ever speak, he was always trying, making all sort of noises, he really wanted to, but for some reason it didn't happen until a lot later. Nobody really knows why this happens and adding another label doesn't help; just keep working on him and don't lose faith!

my son was labeled nonverbal, he became highly vocal with OT, and then developed some spoken language and still growing. Apraxia can only be assessed if the child is frequently attempting to be verbal.

My son was diagnosed a few months of his diagnosis of Autism. A few months into Speech Therapy last year his therapist said after a session she believed he had Apraxia.

Basically she said his brain does not connect to words. Virtually he needs to be taught how to form words. A skilled Pathologist should give the diagnosis. For a professional they often can clearly hear the Apraxia when the child speaks.

Often they may say a word that sounds like the word they tried to say. Tree may sound like swee Milk may sound like Mil . They words also are not arraigned properly when they want to speak.

They absolutely know what they are saying it just can't articulate it. 65% of kids with Autism willl have Apraxia. My son is four his communication is limited. But my son has come a long way since last year.

He most likely will need Speech indefinitely. But he so desires to voice what inside .
