We have a 3yr old (be 4 in February) son who was diagnosed with ASD in September. He has been in Speech and OT (1.5 hr a week) for about a year but we were told ABA therapy was the way to go. The ABA place sounds right. We had our daughter in a preschool but she didn't socialize with the kids (still doesn't except for her little brother) and she was the only kid with ASD in the school. The teachers didn't know how to handle her.
ABA therapy isn't a quick fix but it's the hands down choice of people who do some research into reputable therapies. Our kid needed the one-on-one contact because she also has ADHD and walk off to do what she wants if she is allowed to. We wanted ABA earlier but it wasn't available in Georgia back in 2014 unless you had a lot of money.
I would resist pulling him out. If It's a reputable ABA place they should be willing to work around your son's preschool. Offer to do two full days with them to start, and then if needed, add a day (cut back to 2 days at preschool).
Oftenthe reckmmendation is to do full time ABA (because the benefits are shown at full time... probably based on the studies). However, there are people who do part time ABA and part time preschool if the child is truly getting something out of the preschool time. I think it depends on the child’s needs. If they are really high functioning, it may be a good thing to do preschool.
