Potty Training
A MyAutismTeam Member asked a question 💭

I have a 3.5 year old ASD son and we are having extreme difficulty with potty training. If I bring him to the toilet he will pee, but he has a severe speech delay and receptive language delay and will not tell me when he has to go. Since he has a receptive-expressive language delay if I ask him if he has to go to the potty he won’t answer me. Does anyone have any tips on how we could work on potty training effectively?

Time, time, time...watch for signals. My son was finally totally potty trained 1 week before he turned 4. He was pooping consistently on the potty at 3.5. Peeing was last. He would get really fidgety when he had to poop, so when I saw him getting anxious, I would sit him on the potty. He has mixed expressive-receptive language disorder as well and couldn't tell me yes or no either.

I have the same issue at the moment. The pead has told me about sitting him on the toilet at the same times each day. So far no luck however he does lile sitting on the toilet so I guess thats progress. My nephew has just been toilet trained during the day. It has taken 3yrs to get him there. So I can only say we may be in for a long process but worth it in the end

Thank you so much everyone!! He does tolerate sitting on the toilet so I guess it’ll just take some time and patience!!

We approached this similarly with our youngest boy (now 14yo) who wasn't potty trained until he was close to 5yo. We would spend a day in the bathroom on the weekend. My wife and I would take turns hanging out in there with snacks he loved and favored toys. We would let him drink as much water as he wanted and then would put him on the potty every 10 minutes to start. He loved it because we would reward for sitting and then a huge reward if he actually used the toilet at all. Eventually, we spread out the times between potty sits and he eventually started to go on his own. He also didn't like wet underwear either, so if we let him wear underwear around the house, he soon realized that he had to pull them down to stay dry. His receptive language really started clicking in at that age so I think that was a big part of it. Good luck!

My son (4/12 speech & language delays, also) needed to stand, he never sat to pee. We started by letting him be naked (Yes cleaning is involved... lots of cleaning😉). we kept his little potty in the living room and would carry him over to it ( yes, mid stream😆) he loved the excitement that we showed when it went in. Eventually he went on his own to the potty, which he got even more praise and excitement. Poop took a bit longer, he would not sit on the potty to go so when he would get the poop look so we would Put a pull-up on him. After a bit he would actually just asked for a diaper.
Good luck to you and your little man!
