My son is 7 in 1st grade. I recently called an IEP meeting due to one failing grade. Well this meeting turned into so much more. While I think he’s just failing one class, that’s apparently the only class that’s he’s being graded on as if he were a regular student. And really he’s on a kindergarten level or below in his other subjects. His resource teacher gives him all but one of his grades, his regular 1st grade teacher gives all the rest. Well after we talked with everyone and we figured out… read more

I can attest to what worked for my son - he learned via sight not phonetically. I used Edmark reading program.

Well does he having reading goals in his iep? What are they working with him on? My daughter learned to read by memory...not the traditional sounding out words method...something to consider. The best way that I find is starting with flash cards, then moving on to simple books, then moving onto sequencing a story. After he masters one level on reading and sequencing move on to the next. Don't worry about him being on par with the other kids, all you need to concentrate on is progress. Step into reading books are great for kids...they usually have them at your local library. Leapfrog has a couple of great reading toys...their leapreader is pretty cool. There are also several digital flashcards, and I've heard good things about abc mouse. Good luck.

Thanks everyone! I had read all comments and made a list of things to try as well as going to talk to his doctor about that vision screening.

I think a tutor is a great idea. Our 16yo son (still) struggles with comprehension, but his tutor helped him a great deal in the early years with proficiency. He stayed focused on short (very short) stories with comprehension questions sprinkled throughout. SO much of his issue is and was attention and interest in the subject matter. As a teen, he still loves Looney Tunes and he can read and comprehend so much information when it comes to this topic. Interest=Progress with him. Best of Luck!
