So Desperate Mother
A MyAutismTeam Member asked a question 💭

My daughter is 3 years and 5 months now . All started when the speech therapist suggested on Mother’s Day /2017 that I take sofia for an evaluation since she had a significant delay . She was non verbal . I took her for an evaluation on June/2017 the doctor told me to bring her back in August and then asked me again to bring her back on November/2017 for a final diagnosis . She was diagnosed with autism and he suggested that she will get 30 hours of ABA . But yesterday they came to my house… read more

I would find out why and go to a new company if they can not provide services. If it is a coverage wait list issue, ask them if you can join sessions and participate, have them give you suggestions, take notes and maybe record some sessions. I did 10 hours of ABA homework with our son and spent additional less structured time working on behavior. You can add things like Speech and OT or try for a good therapeutic school. These things can help and add to her programming if necessary.

Also keep talking to her and asking her to choose options ex: do you want the cookie or do you want chips. If she doesn’t talk make her point. You’ll have to start from the beginning. We take things like that for granted. You’ll also might have to tell her how to react. Like if she gets something she loves... you tell her she is happy so she can identify the feeling. If she tantrums or cry’s you say your sad or mad or what ever emotion you think she is exhibiting so she can put the word to the action/feeling. It will cut down on tantrums. ABA will make her throw tantrums in an effort to get her to talk.

I feel your struggle. Not to worry that sounds about right. 2 hrs on 2 days every week is a good start.. it will increases as time goes on to 3hrs twice a week. There will be other therapist/ supervisors that come in or with the ABA therapist and they will use up and hour. Two therapist at once will be 2 hours even though they are there at the same time. It doesn’t seem right but Just try and be involved with the ABA and implement the strategies that they use daily so it’s consistent. The most important thing is routine and consistency. Things will start to improve and before you know it your completing goal after goal.

Oh my I am sorry to hear that this process has been so difficult for you so far. My daughter was evaluated and diagnosed last June also she is 4 right now almost 5, her bday is in 2 weeks. She is also non verbal she babbles a lot and will echo words her and there but for the most part does not say much. This is such a complicated process it's easy to feel defeated but don't give up! My boyfriend and I are learning that this takes a TON of patience. Our daughter was evaluated and assesed through our school district also at the beginning of the yr we heard the same thing too "the earlier the better" or "why did we wait so long". You can't let that get to you or make you feel guilty for anything. They recommended to start our daughter in their special education program where she would be slowly introduced and also be seeing a speech and occupational therapist through the school. However we are really leaning toward home schooling due to our daughters health. Anyway this whole process is super complicated just remember to always follow your gut. If something doesn't feel right look for other options... Also you're not alone 🙂 hope this is helpful
