What Makes A Good ABA Therapist?
A MyAutismTeam Member asked a question 💭

We had a therapist for 15 months (!) who is now going back to grad school. As we start with someone new, and as I talk to a family who was really unsatisfied with their therapist, I’d like to ask my MAT family- what, in your experience, do you feel has made a good therapist that ushered through progress with your child? I think my son likes our new therapist but I am hearing from others observing her that she is green. What qualities have you noticed in a good therapist, and is it ok for them to… read more

Still trying to find a good one. Meeting #6 today. It's hard to find a therapist that is specifically trained to work with autistic children. When I went to grad school, we may have spent 1 week talking about neurological disorders and not 1 minute on how to provide therapy. I was trained as a clinical SW. After being in the field for about a year, I immediately recognized that several of my clients were NOT mentally ill, but developmentally disabled - neuro-diverse. I took it upon myself to learn more about sensory processing disorders and who could help my clients. Back in those days, Occupational Therapists and EC teachers were about the only specialists working with this population. There is still a huge gap in training and serviced to this day. In my opinion and experience.

We have always has atleast 2 techs...one of our last techs went to school and liam absalutlely adored her. and so liam had a new tech take her place...it took time for him to warm up to her as it would for him with anyone...so keep that in mind with there first few meets...what i like about his techs is that they let liam be who he is and help find ways that might help him with programs he is having difficulty with..they take my word as law and like my input on things bc i know him best...i find these things cruicial when wben deciding whether or not they will work...i also dont make rash judgment until i feel i know them better and have seen them in action with liam bc really its about him ,not me...i hope this helps😊

Cntnd...My son needded a very experienced person to know that he is anxious, adult defiant, not engaging in adult led activity or hand over hand, the majority pushed all these things on him and set him back.
Our sessions were nothing but him screaming at them and me not being comfortable watching it yet none of them calling time on the session, when there are alterior motives like tick boxes, qoutas, hours, targets to fill sometimes these people dont see that are children are being harmed to achieve their goals. Its a tightwire act, you need to know when enough is enough. Your instinct is usually right.

And in passing she mwntioned she baby sat an ASD kid into his 20's, shes a single girl and we asked her if she was comfortable could we take her on, on a private basis for extra therapies help or banysitting and she agreed. She spent many years 1 on 1 with ASD kids and this kind of person as we all know is priceless in terms of therapy. She just gets it. Period. Her strategies have been invaluable. Keep going until you find the right one and dont be behind if you thing s.1 is green, they probsbly are not a good fit.
Cntnd..
