Anyone Else Pull Their Child Out Early From School For Therapies?
A MyAutismTeam Member asked a question 💭

I pulled my child out early all of last year at pre-k and doing it again this year at kindergarten to attend ABA and other therapies. It’s in her IEP and we have had no issues from school. There’s a kid in another school in the same school district whos mom was apparently told by the school principal that they cannot pull him out early under any circumstances. They are yet to have an ARD meeting. He has an expired IEP from another town with his diagnosis. Does the principal have authority to… read more

The advocate and/or attorney will handle it. I am glad she reached out to you. Knowledge is powerful and we need to be armed with it. I wish you and the other parent the best. Keep fighting for our special ones. They have no one else.

I've done this since my son was in Kindergarten. He is now entering 3rd grade. All I had to do was provide the school written notice of when he would be leaving and acknowledge that he may not meet academic goals because of the early departure. My was pulled about 40 minutes before the end of the school day twice a week. He arrived about 10 minutes late 1 day a week. It was vital that our son do this as these were the only appointments I could get with his therapists. He does OT, Speech and Vision therapy. I also had no desire take him after school even if I could. He had already spent a full day a school. He is still just a kid and after school appointments just make for too long a day.

Your IEP drives your assessments and your assessments drives your goals. If your goals are to have ABA and your assessment says he needs it let the district provide it on campus. Also check on district transportation. And one one aides. It's the Childs right.

Just wanted to write an update to this post. I had asked the mom to consider talking directly to the director of special ed for the school district and she did. Happy to say he called the principal and told her all ASD kids are to be allowed to leave whenever necessary for therapies etc. Thank you all for your responses.
