I just set up an IEP meeting for my son who is high functioning. School is going awful for him and I need to get a better plan in place. I think part of the issue is the teachers don't fully understand what Autism is. I am going to print off a paper with questions about Autism for all staff attending to answer so I get a better understanding of what they know about ASD. So simply questions like "What is Autism?" But I'm looking for other questions you think would be beneficial to ask. Also any… read more
I think I would ask "what does the term High Functioning mean to you?" They might think a high function Austic does not need any assistance. Which we know is false.
Thank you everyone! The IEP meeting was changed to last night so all the teachers could be there. It went amazing! All the teachers surprised me with their knowledge of ASD. And I think we have a good plan in place that will work for my amazing son.
An inclusion class is a mixture of kids with varying disabilities as well as students with no disabilities. They usually have more teachers in there for the older kids and the teachers work with everybody. Sometimes the classes are smaller for the younger kids but not always. It's more help and support during class. My twins are 6 and are in an inclusion class this year for kindergarten. They are repeating kindergarten from last year and the inclusion class for them both has really helped. One was in one last year and the other was not. The one that was not in one was overwhelmed last year. It is grouped with all the rest of the classes in the grades so it doesn't stand out or anything. I'm not sure if all states have them or not, I live in Georgia.
Co-teaching in an inclusion class worked wonders for my oldest son... I wish I had known to ask for it sooner...he won't ask for help so an extra set of eyes on him when he's struggling helped a lot
I'm so glad to hear that!! :)
