Have Any Of You Taken Your Autistic Son Or Daughter To An Orthodontist??
A MyAutismTeam Member asked a question 💭

This question is more for parents with a Son or Daughter with Autism on the Severe side ...maybe they're even nonverbal. Have you ever taken them to an Orthodontist, and how did that go??? My daughter goes to a Pediatric dentist. We have been very satisfied w/ them. For the last 2 yrs., they have been telling me that my daughter needs braces, and should go to an Orthodontist for an evaluation. I thought yeah, right. My son has braces. I thought about the rubber bands, and all the things that… read more

Yes, my daughter is going to get braces and is super excited about it. She just had oral surgery to have eight baby teeth removed that would not fall out on their own. She is super excited to have the teeth out and to be able to speak more clearly. Now she had to wait for her adult teeth to erupt, as the baby teeth that would not fall out were stopping the natural progression. She should be getting braces in January and is super excited.

Im afraid to even go there with B. They have special needs dentists here who sedate for cleanings etc.. B wouldnt tolerate a typical visit to the dentist. If Daphne will tolerate a consult it cant hurt to try. It sounds like the retainers could work!

Can't say that we've gone through this although we do have a 13 year old (Non-ASD) that will eb fitted for braces within the next year or so.. That being said M who is ASD has to go to the Dentist pretty much first appt of the day for them. They take him into an office where there is a closed door etc etc. If its just a consult it may not be too bad.

I called every ortho in my area and asked what experience they've had with special needs. That really makes all the difference. With the right ortho, your daughter may surprise you! The office also allowed us to go in for what they called monthly "field trips". Where my son can go in and just explore the place. They would let him sit in the chair, hold a couple of tools, and relax a little. We did this for about 5 months. Now he walks in and sits in the chair, doesn't even flinch.
