My son receives OT at home and in clinic, and his OT is recommending we change to a clinic only program for increased effectiveness. I see OT type needs (fine and gross motor skills, self-help) that can be done at home (ie teaching to cut or draw or write can be done anywhere?)...where some of the swinging, jumping, etc. is great at the gym. I have always kept school school and home home. Every child is different a long with their needs follow your heart but keep an open door my journey has taught me if it helps my son's I'm going to adventure it. Best wishes hope all goes well!
The form of OT my daughter now does independent is Cheerleading. Art and dance were other independent forms also.
Fine motor work can easily be done in home & with less distraction. I do feel gross motor work is best done in a facility that has the equipment & space. The one thing I never liked about previous OT facilities is how they crammed numerous kids in a gym & the level of noise & chaos was highly distracting for my child & made him more disregulated with his lack of focus. It really depends on your child & his needs. The therapist is also key, some have skills others don’t.
Follow you gut instinct. Years ago I tried clinical for a couple of years with little progress. Afterwards I got a community TSS worker to do extra curricular activities to substitute OT. Since then she made excellent progress. Now, she never needs a TSS worker for school or OT, all independent. The only type therapy she now gets is 5 hrs per week of Mobile Therapy for socialization. Giving her that push made her excell. Our next goal is doing volunteer work at a library or even community. Preparing for work force. She's 16
Why not mix it up?...do one day clinic and the rest in home just to see how it goes..that is what we did for liam with his Little ducklings program and it works great...just my thoughts...but go with your gut feeling on it otherwise.
