Good morning,
I've been searching without any luck...our son is turning 3 in June (non-verbal). We have our first IEP meeting in a few weeks and wondering if there are any examples of vision statements and goals, etc for a preschooler?? I realize every child is different, but am having a hard time coming up with specific, measurable items. Our son still needs to work on attending to tasks, responding to name...just don't know how to translate that into education goals/vision. Any help is… read more
Well my sons IEP is just like you said. His goals were to identify shapes and colors simple at first than now he is 6 almost 7 and we are doing goals as identifying letters in his name. Writing his name with at least no prompt. He is also non verbal so goals there are using sign language and pecs.
My sons IEP is pretty much what he is behind for other kids his age. Right now we focus on shapes, letters colors but also on his motor skills and speech. He was classed as non-verbal at beginning of year, but was not diagnosised as Autistic until after school started so had to redo his IEP to include that. If your county/state has a program like Ohios "help me grow" they should be able to give you some pointers on what to include.
In the meeting, the school district should have someone writing this with you. The lingo is too complicated for us as a rule.
Does your son have inhome therapy? If so, there should be a director or overseer who comes in every so often- I asked our Easter Seals coordinator who was VERY helpful. They're awesome at putting things into Education Speak =) I find that most of them know quite a bit about IEPS and school districts.
Google “4 year old milestones” and click on the CDC list and copy all those into your IEP (or three year old- depends on timing as you look out one year from now as these are goals for the year ahead). Modify as you see fit.
