How Do I Figure Out What Causes Meltdowns? Is It Really Possible To Avoid Them When Its Something He HAS To Do?

Thank you to everyone who wrote with ideas and support on the day that I was really struggling! It was mentioned that I should try to figure out what happens before a meltdown and how I reinforce it after to encourage it to continue. This is veryhard to do because my little guy's meltdowns can occur when it is time to bathe, time to brush teeth, time to get up and it occurred after a train and boat ride that he loved when he needed to hold my hand in the street. Seems like it occurs any time he… read more

oh i get it my son has meltdowns over the word no he gets abusive sometimes but like you its hard to understand the causes of the meltdowns.. some people ask if there is consequences to the meltdown well speaking from a moms of a sever autistic childs point of view to me is pointless cause its like saying its there fault and ok part of it is i get it but sometimes kids like ours cant help it .it just happens its part of there disability . the most we can do is look at our child and make eye contact i know its hard to do but just talk calmy to them and tell them how much u love them and try to get them to laugh its what i do with my son even when he punches and hits and even bits me i look at him and tell him i love him and tickle him just to make the transtion easier on him and me

I know exactly how you feel and am very stressed out about it! My daughter also has sensory issues with loud noises, touches, smells and does not like being restrained at all or holding hands. I'm trying to figure out ways to deal with the meltdowns in a productive way, as well. Have you tried any sort of "consequences" for the behavior? Or does he respond to calmly talking?

@A MyAutismTeam Member We have just started the calmly talking approach so hopefully it will somewhat help. But the laughing idea is actually not bad! I think I'm going to try to do that a little more and maybe that can help redirect her focus while she's engulfed in her meltdowns. Thank you!

No I dont think so. He flushes toilet and holds his ears but he does it. He definitely does not like to be held by the hand and is not used to it because he is home alot and is able to go wherever he wants at home.....
