Hi. I just moved to Arizona from Ohio. My son is 10 years old and on the spectrum. In Ohio he was in public schools and it was a nightmare for kindergarten through fourth grade. I wanted to enroll him in a Autism school however I learned that I can’t because they need a years worth of Arizona IEP . So I’m left with no choice but to send him again to public schools so I was wondering if anyone could tell me a school that had a good rep for being able to assist children with autism.
Welcome to Mat Family
I don’t know what the Tempe public schools are like, but avoid the Gilbert & Mesa school districts. I recommend checking the Chandler school district, they have a better reputation overall. I don’t know which school is best for ASD kids, you would need to research because they have many elementary schools. I suggest talking to a special ed. Advocate to help you place him where it’s most suitable to meet his needs.
I had a friend whose HFA daughter was highly unsupported in a Mesa school. In general the public schools here are not properly staffed to accommodate the needs of an ASD child. Depending on whether you child is verbal & able to communicate problems at school, the AZ. Public schools are overloaded with students & understaffed, especially in their special ed. Departments leaving our ASD kids needs unmet. You will have to fight for your son’s needs at all times. Sorry to sound so pessimistic, but I’ve been dealing with the Gilbert public school district for almost 10 years with my older son & they can barely meet his ADHD needs.
Your the second person that has told me to stay away from Mesa Schools . Can I ask you why . I wasn’t planning to send my son there but was just curious .
