My son was just diagnosed today and now I don’t if I should stay.
I started to go back to school in August but now I don’t know if I should. I don’t want to take away from my son, I won’t have the same time for homework, and my head isn’t in it right now, but I love school and I did this for me. I don’t know what to do. I don’t know what is right.
I'm certain your goal is to be in a position to support your son even more. So don't give up on your pursuits if you can help it. If you can call on any family or friends to help support, do it. It was also a great suggestion to take a lighter courseload if possible. And, if you're worried about feeling guilty due to time away for your studies, please don't. A better you means better for your son. :-)
Another idea: See if there's any special recreation program you may be able to enroll him in, so that he's busy while you have some study time. Could be a win-win.
Why not go to school online?
Tough question. Your son will always have autism but maybe he will learn to cope with it as time goes by. You could drop out of college but you may not reenroll due to feelings of guilt or just not enough time.
Why not take a reduced course load for now? In the long run, you may need a better job to support your son.
