Will Child Be Able To Speak With Intensive ABA Therapy?
A MyAutismTeam Member asked a question 💭

My 2 yr old girl is diagnosed with autism. She regressed at 18months of age. Her development pediatration recommended to go for early intensive ABA therapy for 30 hrs a week. When I asked her about Speech and OT .She said OT is not required for this kid and speech will come with ABA. She is non verbal but babbles a lot with some meaningless words. Will they really start speaking with ABA therapy?
I was thinking ABA is only for behaviour!!

Honestly, a 2 yr. old child will likely not be able to handle the intensity of 30 hrs. per week of ABA. 1 to 2 hours per day of ABA is more of a realistic goal for a 2 yr. old. There is no guarantee that ABA in place of ST will get a child to talk. I strongly believe that ST is very important, should be individualized, & should not be neglected in favor of ABA services. ST focuses on speech & ABA is more behaviorally centered.

ABA isn’t for every kid and I disagree with the premise of control and dismissal of emotional issues.
OT can help Incase of sensory issues. However do not let anyone stress your child in the name of Theraphy.
Learn about stress, anxiety and neurological connections before you do anything. Also PTSD.
Seek cooperation not compliance.

One of my sons was speech delayed. We got him into speech therapy with the school district at three. He speaks very well now and continues in speech therapy working on the finer points of communication.

Your daughter’s story sounds like my son, interesting.

ABA is great, but speech is a specialized therapy. An ABA therapist won’t specifically work on anunciation or oral motor exercises.

My son had ABA, private speech (@ his school too), as well as OT. If I were to do it all over again, I would do the same thing, all 3 therapies. Again, this is my opinion, my results were successful. My son started to speak again at age 5, today he will be a Senior at a university. Has it been hard, yes, still is, but that’s life.

It isn’t about compliance, it’s redirecting maladaptive behavior via positive reinforcement.
If an ABA therapist performs therapy in your home, as the parent, you have the ability to partake in the session. Anytime you do not agree with the therapist delivery of services, you can intervene. I did, and he received the help he needed.
