Anyone’s nonverbal child not use pecs much, but go to using an AAC? Our son gets the point of exchanging a picture for something, but doesn’t necessarily give us the right picture. It feels likes pecs are a waste of time for him. Any experience is greatly appreciated.
My daughter didn't really connect well with PECS. She seems to be much more interested in technology so it was a smoother transition teaching her to use an AAC device. Her school will be providing it for her to use in the classroom as well as home.
My son uses both Pecs & his AAC device combined. He started with Pecs but definitely prefers his AAC, likely because it’s similar to a tablet. I think success for our ASD kids depends on the pictures looking realistic, at least it does for my son. I think Pecs is very valuable & was the stepping stone to advancing to an AAC device. I’ve never heard of a child not starting with Pecs. It wasn’t easy for my son to learn how to work his AAC device, & I still see him getting confused at times.
Pecs really didn't work for Dylan either..he learned simple manding in school that helps some
My son seemed uninterested in the pecs system, but has really progressed with an Assisted Technology device.
Pecs is a program, if you do it with ABA he will get it
