What Door Lock Sustems Do You Use?
A MyAutismTeam Member asked a question 💭

My son is taking interest in locking/unlocking doors now. We had a chain lock on one, now he beings a chair up to it and has figured it out. Also figured out how to unlock the front door of the house!

Yesterday I replaced both doors security and exterior with just a key lock and a handle. The guy who installed both locks thought it was his place to school about the law. He won't be making that mistake again. Now I can use the bathroom..do a load of laundry or leave the room and not worry about my child eloping. The key stays in my pocket.

My boy is now 24 and we did the same thing about 20 years ago. We tried everything and this is what still works today. We also lean a small ladder against the front door, just in case he gets it open, the ladder will fall. We have also installed alarms on all our doors! When the door opens, the alarm beeps to tell you the door is open. We also have a locking metal screen door! This way we can leave the front door open, if we want. So two locks on screen, one dead bolt and key lock on front door with the ladder. Soooo, you could say 5 locks in front.
We put a dowel in slidders. He broke all locks on shower door, but dowel in bottom front and lock on inside shower door works. We have garage door triple locked and with alarm. Our windows have drop in metal locks, so you can open about 3-4 inches. GOOD LUCK. Remember, you make your own luck.
Oh yea, our alarm is simply safe.
We have also installed 5 cameras around our house called Nest. There are also other camera companies. We can go back 10 days and save clips, for our future reference.
Speaking of reference, he tests all the locks, ALL THE TIME.

We used dead bolts that can only unlock with a key. I now wear a key necklace.

You need to figure out if it is the locks or the outings, or the redirection he is incentivized by. There are great latchboard and lock toys on amazon. I bought a door jam spring lock. My 12yo can't open it.
