What Do We Do When They Get Older?
A MyAutismTeam Member asked a question 💭

Ontario, Canada.
I have 2 sons, 12 and 13.
Homeschooled life skills focus.

Partner thinks we need power of attorney to keep our circumstances into adulthood and to keep them at home. He works, I don’t.

What is the landscape right now, and does anyone participate in committees supporting future planning?

Please share your loved ones’ ASD level, learner level, age, so I can reference this thread in my conversations while advocating please and thanks.

@A MyAutismTeam Member, @A MyAutismTeam Member is correct on all points.
I went through similar when My Son turned 18yo.
The Court will let you know when, and you will more then likely be asked to take a Psyche screening.
But for today, Just enjoy the day. Eat a lot of the Giving Bird and accouterments and enjoy time with family and friends.

Also me and my wife got Co-guardianship so it doesn’t matter who is present. If you only have you then if your not present and they are 18 the doctors are in decision power not your husband (I hear that’s how it would hypothetically work).

I don’t want to piss you off but it differs from state to state. Your state could be quick or slower.
Here in New Hampshire they are VERY strict about granting guardianship rights! Like OMG strict. But when you do met the criteria (and autistic kids are a perfect match), they got ours done in 3 weeks start to finish!!!
Seriously! We are from PA and several PA families can attest that PA is time consuming and long and drawn out. And expensive I hear.
Up here it was:
1)court fees
2)Lawyer fees, your child gets the lawyer not you.
3)Criminal background checks for EVERYONE residing in the house over the age of 18.

My son will be 18 on Christmas Eve next month so we had to get it done quickly.

We just got Guardianship awarded to us by the court on Monday (phone call court case because of Covid). We had to get it done because when he turns 18 then doctors can fight your judgement in an emergency situation. It was a quick and painless process because my son is so low functioning and non verbal.

@A MyAutismTeam Member my son used to wander too. Our local sheriff had bracelets that were fitted with a tracking device. My son wore one until he stopped wandering.
