Potty Training SOS

A MyAutismTeam Member asked a question πŸ’

Well, today was pretty discouraging. 😟 My 3 year old has had 0 successes with potty training so far. We're just starting out, in earnest, but we've been trying to sit on the potty casually for a few months with no luck. I was hoping we'd have at least some successes early on. 3 pee accidents today, no actually going in the toilet (she pooped in the morning before I got her up and again at naptime, in sleeping diapers both times).

She is in lightweight training pants the rest of the day… read more

At 3? Check your expectations. Even nurotypical kids aren’t doing so good at potty training at 3.

My son just wasn't ready at a young 3. The first few times we tried no success. When it sank in (no pun intended) it really sank. And he rarely has accidents now. Hang in there.

We used a timer with the boys.

I use to use a timer...every hour we'd sit on the toliet for 10 minutes took some consistency but eventually she went and we made a hunormous deal about it every time πŸŽ‰ and went from there it got to the point where my daughter would hear the timer and know where we were going it was almost psychological lol...we had to make some adjustments along the way, when pull ups started staying dry during the day i switched to panties same for night had to get up at 2am for pee pees...to poop train we got her a foot stool to bare down on with her feet (it helps a lot) and she got some prune juice to soften her up... we had to carry a travel potty until she was almost 5 because public toliet seats freaked her out, and I would set the timer on my phone because she got stuck on the timer for a long time...I would say we started the process at 2 and she was a little over 3 when she was probably all the way there aside from the travel seats that took longer lol...yeah it took a year but hey slow and steady right lol...

Disclaimer this potty training was from my daughter who's high functioning with severe anxiety disorder...my son who's nonverbal, with SPD is still not there yet but I'm still determined he'll get there 😈.

My boys potty trained at late three to early four. Even then, Steven still has accidents at 10. Lily will be five in a couple months, and shows little to no interest no mayyer what we try to bribe her with.
