Any Parents Home Schooling Their Autistic Children? I Am Looking To Home School My 5th Grader And 7th Grader.

I am honestly considering homeschooling my children this year. Too many inconsistencies and variables with covid to feel safe to send them in to their in person school. This year its everyone at the same time the buildings, sure they will have a masking policy, but honestly kids especially adhd/asd children touch their faces a lot, and some touch all the surfaces, and masks are challenging. Seeing how it went last year when they had cohorts and masking (non delta variant mind you) we were… read more

Members shared their experiences and resources for homeschooling autistic children, with many citing COVID safety concerns, unpredictable school closures, and the challenges masked mandates pose for children with ADHD or ASD who frequently touch their faces and surfaces. Several members recommended free online college courses from universities like MIT, Yale, and Harvard that can be adapted for high school credit, workbooks like Brain Quest that allow flexibility in pacing and learning style, and the Facebook group 'Autism and Homeschooling' for additional community support and resources. A recurring theme was the importance of individualizing education to each child's needs, celebrating the opportunity to think outside the box, and supporting one another's parenting choices without judgment during uncertain times.

I totally agree with you.
There are no mask mandates in Mesa, Arizona. The governer has made it illegal to require kids to wear masks in schools. The schools can recommend wearing masks. It is ridiculous. I am keeping my daughter home and homeschooling her. I got a book from Target that is called "Brain Quest" for 5th graders. I just do it her way and not always by the directions. (She also has OCD which causes some issues with the way she does things.) We also have done some things on line but can't recall what the sites are called. Lots of luck to us all.

@A MyAutismTeam Member Hi there, please be careful about how you phrase your own concerns on this platform. As @A MyAutismTeam Member said, this really is a place for support and sharing of information. If you are looking to deliberate in this way, great! If you are looking to humiliate others, then please take that type of tone and language elsewhere yeah? Let’s keep this place amazing like it is, a safe space to ask questions and support each other’s efforts in making the best decisions possible for their own families. Be well.

Are you on Facebook? There is a group called “Autism and Homeschooling” that has a ton of resources and parents community 😊 I absolutely feel you on the schooling decision and cases and keeping our children safe. I view in person therapy similarly and struggle w that decision

@A MyAutismTeam Member, you do not understand what homeschooling is if you think the only lesson being taught is "how to fear the world." Everyone makes the best choices we can for our children and their education. For some of us, that is keeping them home.

I am for the same reasons- my son is much younger but is unable to adapt to change and we feel the incertainty of COVID could disrupt him enough that we decided to keep him home. Call your local board of ed to see what they require from you.
