Transitions. My Little Is 6. She Has A Tough Time With Transitions But Especially Home From School. Any One Have This Problem?
A MyAutismTeam Member asked a question 💭

My little is 6 and first grade. We recently had med change which we haven’t been able to full implement. She also just had iep meeting where we had to change her placement from 60%mainstream to 80% sped. Over the summer her sped teacher died of Covid and so she has ALOT going on. My problem is with transitions. She has trouble with all transitions but the most from recess and from school home. I pick her up from school so it isn’t a bus issue. Once home depending on her day, depends on if she… read more

Have you tried one of these types of visual routine boards? Having a routine with pictures might help her know what is coming next. You just go over it with her for example, after school is snack time, then we will go to the library, after library is dinner, etc.... pointing to each picture and going to the board each time you transition to a new activity. I like this one because you can pick and choose your cards and remove them (velcro) after you've done them, showing her "ok that's done, what's next?" and so on.. Here's an example of one:

Perhaps in days she really enjoys at school they could take photo of her doing activity and use this as reminder to encourage her to go school

Oh boy, isnt that the way it is?! How long is her school day? Ive found thatshorter school days are better than full days. Too much time away from security of mom abdhome adfamiliar environment makes transitions worse. Even to go home.

She goes full days. We only have 3 regular buses and there is no way she could the bus. We do a now and then and visual schedule at school so they prepare her for home. Take pictures at school and we are fb friends with the new sped teacher so she tells Ali that she sees she carved a pumpkin or jumping on the trampoline ect…
