Potty Training Methods?
A MyAutismTeam Member asked a question 💭

Happy Tuesday! Wondering what potty training methods worked best for your kids? My son has started showing signs he may be ready. (He will wake up dry from naps and even night sometimes, he will pee as soon as his diaper comes off, he started asking to be changed once he’s dirty, etc.) I ordered some board books to read him about potty training and unpacked all our old cloth diapers (they’re Velcro so he can still take them off but I’m thinking it’ll help transition him to underwear and feeling… read more

If you can stay home for a while, multiple potties around the house, no diaper or pants, learn his cues (what he does right before he goes), catch him in time to get him on the potty. He has to be put on the potty, even just for the end of it a few times before he makes the connection that this is the appropriate place to do that. Then, matter-of-fact praise, but not over the top.

Yeah, it sounds like he is ready and I love the idea of the velcro cloth diapers. After trying a lot of things we ended up resorting to potty treats. We gave her a mini blueberry muffin if she successfully went potty. Not optimal but it worked. I also think being in preschool and seeing that other kids were using the potty helped.

It's been a while since I potty trained. I'm sure there are way cooler potties out there now. Maybe let him help pick it out.

@A MyAutismTeam Member the reward system worked really well for one of the kids I nannied for. Hoping the same works for my son, he doesn’t really like sweets but likes sprinkles. Trying to find little sealable cups or something to put a spoonful of sprinkles in for easy grab and go. I wish he liked stickers. That’s what we used for my nanny kids, so easy!

@A MyAutismTeam Member that’s the plan so far! I’m trying to decide what kind of potty to invest in. Any suggestions? There are so many options. I’m torn between one with a lid or a mini realistic one. Youngest loves to put things in the actual toilet so I’m sure he’ll want to do the same with this one so a lid would be nice. When we first started potty training my nanny kid, we went no pants or undies for a couple days. We had a few accidents but she caught on pretty quick, big sister was a huge help though because she wanted to be just like her and she responded really well to a reward system.
