Video Games As An Escape

Hello all. I have a 24 year old son who is passionate about video gaming and has dreams of competing professionally one day.

He got into video games and trading card games early on and for a long time I thought it was just a hobby. But I’ve come to see that I think gaming might serve as an escape for him. He’s very empathetic and has said to me before that he doesn’t understand why this world is so hard and cruel.

I'm a gamer, myself. Not to the point of obsession, as I work three jobs and don't have as much time to game as I'd like, but when I was in school I spent a lot more time on the controller :) It sounds to me like he's found a healthy outlet! Many gamers use it as an escape from the harshness of reality. Some people turn to drugs or alcohol as a form of self-medication, but escaping the world in a good game is a healthy way to get away from it all. As long as he is still in tune with reality, I'd say that you have nothing to be concerned about :) Hope this helps!

I even saw a news segment where a wife complained how her hubby would be up till all hours gaming…and IT’S the cause of much marital strife for couples in their 20s & 30s

Yes…my 29 year old son, Dennis, is very much into gaming, too. Ive been concerned, but have come to learn that MANY neurotypical males, of ALL ages are, too. That helped me relax a bit…guess its just a sign of the times 👍🏽
