Is Intuniv Usually A Big Change For Kids?
A MyAutismTeam Member asked a question 💭

My son is 8. He is diagnosed with autism and anxiety disorder. He’s not really taken many meds before. But his pediatrician put him on intuniv to calm him down because he’s contstanly into trouble at school to the point DCS is involved with his behavior now. But since he started this medication he’s not talking but saying a few words here and there, he won’t eat barely. I mean it’s 5pm here and he’s ate 1 COOKIE all day. I’ve not seen him dance like he always does. I’m so sad. He’s also sick… read more

My son was on guanfacine for ADHD and sleep difficulty. Dosage was gradually increased since the lowest dose did nothing to help calm him. As the dose increased, so did the OCD and aggression. This medication was a nightmare and I had him weaned off immediately! I hope you have a better experience with it. Just monitor behavior closely

one of the biggest SEs from Guanfacine is exhaustion. 2mg depending on his size may be too much medication for him to handle.. I have heard positive things about this med but that is the biggest issue people seem to talk about. Perhaps ask if he can go down in dose? good luck

My 10 year old had that and made him very emotional the guanfacine. Hes on Ambilify now a version of it different name and works well small dose. He was hyper and bad behavior also. Praying things work out for u.

Thank you so much. He’s actually on the generic, Guanfacine. He told me he doesn’t feel like Jax that he feels wonky. I told him if he felt that way I was not making him take the medication. He’s only on 2mg.

I’m not a Dr. so I can’t say for sure what’s happening, but it sounds like he is having side effects from it. Look up the generic name, which is guanfacine, there are many side effects from this med. My 10 yr. old tried it & it caused him a lot of distress, so I stopped it immediately. The worst side effects is that it can lower your blood pressure, cause difficulty breathing, nausea & vomiting. It was originally used as a med. to lower blood pressure, but Dr.’s now prescribe it to kids with ADHD. The studies say it helps control ADHD like behaviors, but at what cost to a child’s health. Maybe the dose is too high for your son or it’s just not working well for his body. I hope my info. helps you.
