Are There Accommodations That Can Be Made If Child Is Very Sensitive To Noise?
A MyAutismTeam Member asked a question 💭

My son who is 8 hates all noises that are related to sports basketball softball etc even if his not playing just being around it upsets him.I have been thinking are there accommodations that can be made for him I mean in gym class I’m pretty sure they play sports or in his classroom these noises upset him I don’t want him to be excluded but just don’t want him to be forced to be around that if he can’t handle it

Noise cancelation headphones are awesome for so many different environments. Get that added as an accommodation.

Noise canceling headphones help my son. If he doesn't object to anything over his ears or on his head, maybe you could try that. Good luck.

White noise is the sound similar to a fan or the sound of rain. You can buy white noise machines or put white noise on headphones and it calms kids and adults and helps them focus. Some people even use white noise to help fall asleep.

We have already tried those he doesn’t like them he only likes headphones that offer Bluetooth like to have music in the background but of coarse school would be a no for this

I agree with both previous answers. Schools love this accommodation because it's relatively inexpensive, and it works. If the student doesn't like keeping headphones on, things are tougher. Partitioning off the noise, which only makes it out of view, not out of ear range. Or doing an alternate activity at that time, like going out to the track while the rest of the class does gym inside. Since you specifically mentioned sports, headphones may not be a great solution, either. Sometimes you have to hear the sounds to know where the ball is, or what the next play is going to be.
