Hello! I wanted to share a lit bit of my homeschooling experience with you. My son is 17 years old, besides autism, he was also diagnosed with moderate to severe intellectual disability. He’s non-speaking (non-verbal). This is my second school year doing homeschooling with him. Since my son is a visual learner he does better working one on one. In the state we live in, the parents are responsible to come up with a curriculum, so I used his last IEP as a guide. Eventually, I’ve been adding more subjects according to what I would like him to learn in order to be more independent. He also helps with household chores, and he recently started helping me with clipping his fingernails. I also have included OT related activities to his curriculum and we try to do PE in the morning. Homeschooling might look intimating at first, I used to be one who believed that I would never be able to homeschool both of my kids, however, it has been a blessing. At the end of the day, every parent knows what works best for their children.

I have to agree woth Mariam, my daughter is 10 and we've been doing homeschooling since she was a second grader. Aside from being diagnosed with non verbal autism, she's also the survivor of a rare birth defects called gastroschisis wich impacted her immunity. Honestly it's the best decision we made, she gets all the one on one time she needs, as well as all the therapy services she needs. And we dont have to worry about her catching illnesses from other kids in a public setting. We do homeschooling through the K12 program in CA. And they have an amazing special Ed program, I was even able to get a loaner AAC device for my daughter to use for communication. It's been a blessing.
