My daughter is having trouble keeping up in class and is behind in reading. She gets help from the teacher but still isn’t completing her work in the classroom. She is reluctant to do homework. She says that she can’t read. She’s reading with help the books that she’s familiar with, and I think that she’s memorizing the words. She has trouble reading her sight words and sounding out words as she goes also
I saw a video where an autistic teenage boy said that he can read a book but not… read more
Ask for an IEP. They will need to do lots of documentation and assessments. Anything you can provide to them from any Dr’s or therapists will also help. Make sure you have an ESE advocate from your school district at your meeting so they can help guide you. You want to make sure you put all accommodations into the IEP.
Maybe ask the school to give her a test for dyslexia. Then they can give her specialized reading tutoring.
I found the Enid Public Schools website. They have a lot of elementary schools! You will want to select the school, click on menu, then go to the staff page to find the special education teacher. I see for Eisenhower it is Tana Germundson. There is a link under their name to send a message.
She writes some letters and numbers backwards. I asked about that last year, but her first grade teacher said that it’s normal at that age. She also said that looking at pictures and making up the story is also normal reading.
She’s supposed to be getting reading intervention in a small group with her teacher. She just got reading glasses that I hope will help her also. Our eye doctor said that glasses won’t teach her to read. But he did say that she needs help with tracking which is important for reading.
Does her school have a special needs unit? My son goes in there for the first two hours of the day and does the same school work as his classmates. You would also talk to the special needs teacher about assessing your daughter to be put on an IEP.
I hope this helps. Let me know if I can help more.
