Has Anyone Dealt With Severe Behavioral Changes Suddenly At 14?
A MyAutismTeam Member asked a question πŸ’

My son is 14 y/o and was in general obedient and well behaved with occasional but mild misconduct issues, that's until about two months ago when he started spitting constantly and peeing at all times and places, also laughing kind of defiantly, I took him to his neuro and he took him off Risperidone (which had also made him gain a lot of weight) and put him on Atomoxetine but it only made it worse, now he has meltdowns (it had been like 2 years since he had any), and (not sure if because of the… read more

It is a hard age because the hormone fluxuations mean you tend to need a lot of med adjustments. Also, if he has a comorbid mental illness, this may be the age that happens. They may be reticent to formally diagnose it quite yet, though.

Thank you so much @A MyAutismTeam Member, he had been overall well for about a year or so, the medication change was because he started acting out (along with the weight gain) but much more mild than he currently is.
I talked to his doctor and lowered his Strattera dose for some days, but not a big improvement, I'll try to talk to him about switching back to Risperidone in combination or some other med

Was your child doing well on the respiridone other than the weight gain? If so maybe should try abilify or invega? Similar drugs with supposed less weight gain. Or go back to the Respirdone and talk to doctor about adding metformin to it. Metformin is a diabetic med sometimes added to respiridone to help neutralize the weight gain. Hope u are doing ok. Hope things get better for u and your child

I feel you! My son is 14 and his behavior is changed but not as extream. He spening alot of time in his room, doesnt want to go outside or swim. He also doesnt like to stay places too long. I am pretty sure its hormones and being a teenager)
We dont want to put him on meds. We started a probiotic this summer and his meltdowns became less. We have tryed CBD oil on his pancakes as well, that worked too.
