Melatonin Yay Or Nay?
A MyAutismTeam Member asked a question 💭

What are everyone’s thoughts about Melatonin? I have a lot of confusion about it myself. Some say no way it’s terrible for kids, others say it’s safe and helps everyone. My doctor didn’t quit answer when I asked he just asked why I stopped giving it to my son. Overall I just want to know if anyone actually has an answer. Not to use everyday but in moderation.

My son didn’t benefit from Melatonin. Based on my research of it, unfortunately can only help you to fall asleep, but isn’t made to help our kids sleep through the whole night. It caused my son to become aggressive when we tried it so I stopped giving it to him. I’ve also heard it can cause nightmares too. I’m guessing your doctor didn’t answer because it’s effectiveness varies and he knows it’s only effective to help our kids to fall asleep.

I think in moderation it's okay,my son is actually off of it because it was giving him nightmares I believe, so far so good but if he just can't sleep, I would give it to him

So, melatonin affects people differently. For our son, we have to give him melatonin. We have tried without, tried changing hours of naps and bedtimes, tried other remedies, tried no nap at all, either way he would be up aaaaaaaaaalllllllllllll nnniiiiiggghhhhttt llloooonnnggg. Yeah, sounds dramatic but very real for us. Aziel has always had sleep problems even while he was still in the womb. It carried with him after birth. Aziel had night terrors way before melatonin and now he hasn’t had any. Thankful for that. At the end of the day we are all just trying to help our kids the best and safest way we can. If melatonin works continue to do so. Our bodies produce it naturally which is what makes us feel sleepy at bedtime. However for ASD people it gets to be not enough sometimes or for some which is why supplements are given. Do what works for your kiddo. 🫶🏼

Yes that's really what I use it for because it's super tough for them to whine down. My son will be up the whole night. Even if I put them in bed at a decent time. I didn't give it to them tonight. We'll see how things go.

I give my kids Melatonin. Only the Walmart brand for kids and the recommended dosage. My youngest son takes guanfacine so I try not to give it to him close together.
