Social Skills Therapy
A MyAutismTeam Member asked a question 💭

I don't know where to get social skills therapy. I moved to a town that has money and was supposed to have a good special ed department and it's awful. They just keep wanting to ship him off to residential. He issues with all of the changes we had during the pandemic and immediately after between schools and being forced to move by the old landlord because she was not a nice person. Lol she bought my apartment house and wanted us out so she could renovate and raise the rent. He had lived there… read more

We did have the BCBA come to the house to do a home visit to observe... I think they called it an FBA. She talked to me for about 20 minutes, spent about 5 minutes with him. She had written some questions on paper as I told her she might want to do, he answered by circling the responses he liked. The school, when asked by the outside of school counselors that we could get together and work with the school counselor, has shot it down. Assistant director, I don't know if directors, the right term, of the special ed department is not a very warm and fuzzy person. And she has resisted to some degree I think. She just wants us to ship them off to boarding school. She just wants to wipe her hands of him. She doesn't want us to try to get him to function in a normal environment again.

The tutoring they're giving us is absolutely useless. And I said something today because she brought my 17-year-old, high functioning and intelligence a son, a math assignment. It was about eight questions in addition at about third grade level. And then whatever the number is you color in the color of that number goes to. I just said we need to start doing more than this. Ugh

If your school isn't helping, the school district may help. Mine sent a specialist out to study my son's behavior and triggers and worked it into his IEP.
