My daughter recently was discharged from an inpatient facility, they put her on chlozapine because of her increased aggression. The weekly blood draws were difficult, we had them come to the house, she would get aggressive with us, holding her down was not an option, she’s 8 but very strong and big for her age. I didn’t see much of a change when she came home, she was at the facility for a little over a month. Still could not concentrate on a task for more then 1 min, more stimming, more scripting, randomly hitting other students at school or us at home. Wetting the bed every night, difficult for her to wake up for school when before she was up 7:00 am without any problems. They wanted me to give her Haldol and Ativan before the blood draws. I feel that’s too much to go through for a med I’m not 100 percent sold on. I truly believe she has ADHD along with the autism. I voiced this plenty of times and they just dismiss that.
Does your kiddo experience psychosis? Some of the people with whom I work at the mental health group home take clozapine. It is a wonder drug for many people as it typically yields positive results! My best friend takes it as well for schizoaffective disorder. The one thing about it is that it can, on rare occasions, affect one's white blood cells count, so blood work is done regularly for anyone taking it.
