She tends to do okay once she’s asleep. Sometimes she wakes up in the middle of the night but she’s alert. She woke up today at 5am after sleeping since 9:30 last night. She was crying and throwing herself on her bed. It was like when she had a meltdown. I don’t believe she was in pain. She kept giving me the tv remote but she wasn’t happy with anything I put on the tv. Water always calms her down so we got her in the shower and after 20 minutes of playing with bubbles she calmed down and got… read more
Thank you for your answers, I’ve been thinking about incorporating CBD gummies or drops. We have tried melatonin and it just wired her instead.
My son has had bouts of something like nightmares and I let him climb into my bed, talk to him and tell him he can let me know what is scaring him, and that I will keep him safe, etc. It is scary. We take deep breaths together.
Maybe she is experiencing a hard transition between sleep and waking moments or differentiating between dream and reality ...
I went through that a lot when my son was younger. HE would wake up kicking, crying and took a lot time to calm down. He is better now.
I don't know what works for him. I guess we used social stories to describe what he went through and gave him coping strategies to manage big emotions that happen during transition. or maybe he outgrow as he gets older.
Our 4 year old seems to be allergic to sleep. There have been days where he wakes up around 6:30am and is active straight through to bedtime, but is clearly still wide awake when we try to get him down. We say goodnight and leave the room and immediately he is out of bed and running around in circles. Sometimes we use the weighted blanket with about a 50% success rate and sometimes rocking with him in the rocking chair works, maybe 80% success. We've so far been able to avoid medication but sleep deficiency doesn't make him sleepy, only more hyper!
Sometimes my son wakes up upset in the middle of the night. For him, it means he needs to have a bowel movement. In some kids, melatonin can cause nightmares, odd dreams. If you think that could be it you can talk to your doctor about changing dose or alternative. Hope it gets better.
